UAB upgrades signage at venues

08/13/2009 9:31 AM

The University of Alabama at Birmingham and Daktronics announced an agreement to upgrade several athletic venues on the campus of UAB with integrated scoring and video display systems. Blazer fans entering Bartow Arena, Young Memorial Field and the new on-campus softball complex will soon be greeted by state-of-the-art displays to be designed, manufactured and installed by Daktronics.

"The new boards will definitely enhance our fans’ gameday experience,” said UAB Athletic Director Brian Mackin. “I think our student-athletes will take a lot of pride in the enhancements of our facilities and I know our coaches will do the same. We want to put an emphasis on improving our athletic venues and this project is a major step in the right direction.”

Bartow Arena will soon boast several new displays to showcase Blazer men’s and women’s basketball as well as volleyball. At the heart of the installation, fans and players alike will be informed and entertained by a large centerhung display overlooking the court. Four 8 foot high by 12 foot wide LED video screens utilizing 10 mm resolution will present all the existing action below in a crystal clear view. Daktronics LED video boards can operate as single large displays or be divided into multiple zones (windows) to show a wide variety of statistics, information, graphics, animations and live and recorded video.

LED ring displays will be installed above and below the video screens. These displays provide fans with in-game information, out-of-town scores, promotional messages and crowd prompts that create an interactive experience. UAB sponsors will also have creative opportunities to get their messages across through motion graphics and other eye-catching content.

Daktronics will also provide custom scoring displays to the ends of the arena to show basic game information. Down on the court Daktronics will supply nearly 60 feet of the popular LED courtside scorer’s tables.

Young Memorial Field, home to UAB baseball, will see the addition of a 14-foot-high by 20-foot-wide LED video display. Keeping score, a reliable Daktronics scoreboard will display all essential game information with bright LED digits. The overall display will also provide identification and sponsorship opportunities to promote UAB supporters.

The new on-campus softball complex will soon light up with a Daktronics 14 foot high by 17 foot wide video display. Complementing the video display will be a scoreboard, sponsor panels and identification displays.

The video equipment will be operated by a new mobile truck unit that will provide live game production and instant replay capabilities to also be used at UAB home football games.

The facility upgrades are part of UAB athletic department’s extended ten year relationship with ISP Sports, the exclusive multi-media and advertising rights holder for Blazer athletics.
