Rising costs and fundraising difficulties forced the Rutgers University Board of Governors to approve $102 million in spending on the university football stadium without many the amenties envisioned.
In fact, the $102 million does only one thing: add 12,000 seats to the stadium. That's a far cry from the original plan, which added new locker rooms, reception areas and more.
Also new: the university will pick up the entire cost of the expansion. Originally the plan was to raise $30 million in private donations, but that effort was poorly conceived and executed. It may have cost Athletic Director Robert Mulcahy his job: he was fired Wednesday after university officials criticized his lack of fundraising abilities and alleges business mismanagement in the athletic department.
